Intel launched its brand new Skylake processor lineup earlier this year. And now the chip manufacturer is testing the M variations of its sixth generation processors, intended for Smartphones and other portable devices such as PCs on USB sticks and Laptops.
Intel senior VP, Kirk Skaugen, said
“New 6th Gen Intel Core-based systems are more responsive than ever with enhanced performance, battery life and security.”
Intel is not a competitor in the smartphone chip manufacturing race and it looks like that is about to change. The current leader in chip manufacturing for smartphones is Qualcomm which produces 80% of the chips being utilized in 4G handsets. As always, more competition is better for the consumers as makers will race each other to beat competing prices and features. Which in turn means faster innovations. The Intel Skylake M chips might be unveiled in 2016.
As Intel is a reputable company, it shouldn’t be too long before smartphone manufacturers opt for Intel Skylake M chips instead of the ones they currently use. Some of the features in the upcoming Skylake M processors include:
- Increased battery life
- Optimized for 4K
- Better Security
